I'm trying to track my distance.

My fitness tracker says I walked 10,000 steps today. How far is that actually in miles? I'm trying to track my distance.

Great question! Use the How Far is 10000 Steps calculator to convert steps to distance. The answer depends on your stride length: Average adult: 10,000 steps ≈ 4-5 miles (6.4-8 km). More precisely: average stride is about 2.1-2.5 feet, so 10,000 steps × 2.3 feet = 23,000 feet = 4.35 miles. However, stride length varies by: height (taller people have longer strides), walking speed (faster pace = longer stride), terrain (uphill = shorter stride), fitness level. To find YOUR stride: measure a known distance (like 100 feet), count your steps, divide distance by steps. Or: your stride in inches ≈ height in inches × 0.413. Example: 5'8" person (68 inches) has stride of ~28 inches = 2.33 feet, so 10,000 steps = 23,300 feet = 4.4 miles. The 10,000 steps goal originated from a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign but has become a widely accepted fitness benchmark. It's roughly equivalent to: 4-5 miles of walking, 400-500 calories burned (varies by weight/pace), about 1.5-2 hours of walking at casual pace. For fitness tracking: focus on consistency over exact numbers, include various intensities (some brisk walking), consider step quality not just quantity, combine with other activities (cycling, swimming don't count steps). To increase daily steps: park farther away, take stairs, walk during phone calls, use standing desk, walk meetings, get a dog! Track trends over time rather than obsessing over daily totals.
